Innovatiedistrict Delft, rooted in engineering

Innovation has shaped the Dutch city of Delft for centuries. From the work of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and Johannes Vermeer to today’s world-leading engineering research at TU Delft, the city has continuously combined scientific curiosity with practical application. The Innovatiedistrict Delft builds on this tradition, translating a long-standing culture of innovation into a contemporary organised innovation space where technology, entrepreneurship and urban life converge.

Located between the TU Delft Campus, Schieoevers and the Delftechpark, the Innovatiedistrict Delft forms a coherent spatial and functional system rather than a single, closed campus. Its strength lies in connectivity: physical, institutional and social. By linking research facilities, industrial areas, and urban neighbourhoods, the district creates conditions for interaction among students, researchers, entrepreneurs, established companies, and residents. This deliberate mix enables innovation to move more fluidly from idea to application.

The spatial structure of the Innovatiedistrict Delft reflects this ambition. The area comprises more than 100 hectares of innovation and employment space, embedded within the city and well connected by public transport, cycling infrastructure and pedestrian routes. Rather than separating functions, the district is developed as a multifunctional urban environment where working, learning, experimenting, and, in the future, living are closely intertwined. This approach supports informal encounters, knowledge spillovers and long-term collaboration; key ingredients of successful organised innovation spaces.

At the heart of the district lies the TU Delft Campus, one of Europe’s leading technical universities and a major generator of talent, research and start-ups. TU Delft Campus is the international breeding ground for radical innovations, shaping the future of Robotics, Quantum, Health & Tech and Energy Transition.Around it, specialised innovation environments such as the Biotech Campus Delft, Planet B.io, and Buccaneer Delft provide space for scale-ups and established companies active in fields including biotechnology, circular manufacturing, the energy transition, and advanced engineering. Together, they form a robust ecosystem that attracts international companies while remaining firmly rooted in the local and regional economy.

What distinguishes the Innovatiedistrict Delft within the broader IADP network is its strong engineering profile combined with an explicitly urban context. Innovation here is not confined to laboratories or offices; it is tested and demonstrated in real-life settings. Field labs and pilot projects enable the development of new technologies in close collaboration with the city, addressing societal challenges such as sustainability, mobility, and climate adaptation. This makes the district both a place of technological excellence and a living laboratory.

Equally important is governance. The Innovatiedistrict Delft is a long-term collaboration between the municipality of Delft, TU Delft, local business associations, regional authorities and the Province of South Holland. This public–private partnership ensures alignment between spatial development, economic strategy and societal goals. It enables coordinated investment in infrastructure, facilities and public space, while leaving room for entrepreneurial initiative and organic growth.

The Innovatiedistrict Delft demonstrates how cities can harness their existing strengths to create environments where innovation thrives sustainably. By combining high-tech research, entrepreneurial activity and urban quality, Delft contributes to the national and international innovation landscape and offers valuable lessons for other regions.
